Graphic Overview System of the Nevada Test Site (source of the Close-In Fallout
maps) but no map can be found in the volume.
Town Data Base
The distribution of Town Data Base (TDB) fallout observations spread out in
a fan shape north of the detonation site (Fig.TS/8/TDB). This is consistent
with the spread of the upper air trajectories whose envelope of coverage
extended toward the north-northeast through the north-northwest. The
heaviest depositions extended almost directly north from the explosion site but
in the northern third of area 2 of Nye County the heaviest depositions headed to
the northeast. The "axis" of the depositions lay about halfway between the
initial movements of the 3.0 and 12.2 km trajectories.
County Data Base
The areas of heaviest fallout in the County Data Base (CDB) region
(Fig.TS/8/TCDB) lay beneath the envelope of the paths of the five upper-air
trajectories (Fig.TS/8/T) that started toward the north and curved to the
northeast in southern Idaho. Lesser amounts of fallout are shown in nearby
California, western Nevada, southeast Oregon, northern Utah, southwest one-
fourth of Wyoming and far northwest Colorado. The source of the radioactivity
in these latter areas cannot be directly attributed to the primary trajectories
associated with test How. Gummed paper (GF) observations that were within the
CDB region reflected the depositions shown in the CDB map. Heavy depositions
could be expected beneath the closely-aligned trajectories associated with a
rather powerful tower explosion.
Upper-Air Trajectories
All of the four lowest upper-air trajectories (3.0, 5.6, 7.2 and 9.2 km)
started toward the north-northwest from the detonation site then curved slowly
to the right. The highest trajectory (11.8 km) started to the north-northeast
but diverted to the left and joined the general path of the four
other trajectories in northern Nevada (Fig.TS/8/T). The entire group then
remained fairly close together, turning slowly to the right until they were
headed eastward just north of North Dakota. At that location, the 3.0 km
trajectory shifted a little to the left, crossed the southern part of James Bay,
Canada, and continued eastward into eastern Canada.
The highest four trajectories continued the slow turn to the right (along
the contours of a high-altitude high-pressure ridge) just skirting the northern
Great Lakes heading southeastward to cross New York State and leave the U.S.
between Maryland and Massachusetts. At this time, their tracks were still
fairly close to a common path, the result of little directional shear exhibited
during the entire traverse to the east coast. The fastest two trajectories (9.2
and 11.8 km) reached the east coast over New Jersey and Connecticut at the end
of the second day. The slower 7.2 km trajectory, reached the coast over New
Jersey in the middle of the third day, and the 5.6 km trajectory crossed
Connecticut into the Atlantic Ocean near the end of the third day. These four
highest trajectories were spread over only 345 km, at the coastline crossing,
after traversing about 5000 km, making the spread only 7 percent of the common
trajectory path length.
The lowest and slowest trajectory, 3.0 km, continued to the east-northeast
from North Dakota into Canada reaching the Province of Quebec at the end of the
fourth day, where the trajectory was dropped.
The deposition of radioactive iodine (I-131) was extensive over the United
States following the detonation of the moderately powerful tower test, How.
Almost every gummed paper (GF) radioactivity collection station received some
fallout. Depositions were very heavy during the first day (1155 GMT, 5 June to
1800 GMT, 6 June), following the explosion, beneath the closely-aligned
trajectory tracks in northern Nevada (wet) and southern Idaho (dry). Moderate
to heavy depositions continued in the same areas on the second day in addition
to heavy fallout in Montana and northwest North Dakota; almost all were dry.
Light fallout also was deposited in northern Utah, southwest Wyoming, western
Nebraska and over South Dakota. Meanwhile, the highest two trajectories were
moving to the southeast over Upper Michigan, New York State and lower New
England without any fallout being recorded there.
On the third day (1800 GMT, 7 June to 1800 GMT, 8 June), the southeastern
boundary of the fallout area moved from South Dakota to a line from southeast
Kansas to northeast Wisconsin and by the fourth day the area of fallout was
covering the entire eastern half of the United States. List (1953) states that
the advancing boundary of this area of fallout coincided each day with a mass of
cold air moving southeastward from western Canada. Also, since the trajectories
carrying the debris cloud passed over or through this cold air surge, this cold
air mass carried the radioactive iodine across the eastern U.S. as noted above.
However, the heaviest depositions on the fourth day were found in the midwest,
Great Lakes and New York State, all the result of rain. Otherwise, dry fallout
was extensive over the U.S. but mostly very light.
Fallout was extensive over the U.S. from the fifth through the seventh
days (1800 GMT, 11 June to 1800 GMT, 12 June), mostly light dry but some light
to moderate wet depositions. Subsequently, isolated areas of light fallout were
found here and there through the tenth day (1800 GMT, 15 June to 1800 GMT,
16 June) in the country where the largest amounts resulted from precipitation.
As was found in other tests where fallout spread extensively across the
country, complex upper-air patterns were largely responsible for extensive
mixing of the debris completely away from the trajectories' paths. For test
How, a large and strong high altitude low-pressure system was positioned south
of the trajectories in the central U.S. on the day of the explosion. This low-
pressure system entrained debris from the region of the trajectories and carried
it in a counter-clockwise high-speed motion around the low center. The low-
pressure system then drifted southeastward to the Gulf of Mexico thus increasing
the area over which radioactive debris was spread. Strong shears among the
several upper-level wind currents also contributed to the strong lateral
dispersion of the debris cloud. The effects of the strong high-altitude low-
pressure system, combined with the low-level advancing cold at the lowest
levels, noted above, caused the spreading of radioactivity over most of the
United States following test How.
