Trajectory and Fallout Characteristics
Teapot, Apple 1 and Wasp Prime
Tests Apple 1 and Wasp Prime are combined in the deposition analysis, as
explained below. However, the close-in fallout pattern was determined only for
Apple 1, a powerful tower burst.
Close-In Fallout
The distribution of measured Close-In Fallout (CIF) for test Apple 1 is
depicted in Fig.TP/7/X. The axis of the deposition pattern extended to the
east-northeast then turned to the east beyond 160 km from the explosion site.
The rather narrow pattern crossed both Iron and Washington Counties of Utah then
extended into western Kane County, a distance of about 345 km from the
detonation site. The first 160 km lay beneath the 5.6 km trajectory but then
the CIF axis curved to the right taking an angle halfway between the 5.6 and 9.2
kilometer trajectories.
No Close-In-Fallout or Town Data Base estimates were available from test
Wasp Prime. Because it was a small yield airdrop test, detonated only five
hours after the powerful Apple 1, any of the above two sets of measurements
would have been masked by the heavy deposited radioactivity of Apple 1. The
County Data Base includes depositions from both Apple 1 and Wasp Prime.
Town Data Base, Apple 1
The pattern of Town Data Base (TDB) fallout observations extends eastward across
south-central Lincoln County and covers most of the northern-half of Washington
County, Utah (Fig.TP/7/TDB). This is generally consistent with the CIF
distribution shown in Fig.TP/7/X. There are some significant TDB depositions
outside the outermost contour of the CIF pattern. These are in north-central
portion of area 1 and northwest portion of area 2 of Lincoln County and one
isolated observation in east-central portion of area 2 of Clark County.
Where the TDB pattern overlapped the CIF contours the fallout values
compared quite well.
County Data Base
Nearly every county in the County Data Base (CDB) region east of a north-
south line through NTS was estimated to have received some fallout, as shown
Fig.TP/7/TCDB, from the combined tests Apple 1 and Wasp Prime. However the
manner is obscure in which depositions extended unbroken from NTS to the
southern borders of Arizona and New Mexico, even in moderate amounts, and into
northeast Nevada and southwest Idaho when none of the upper air trajectories of
either test approached those areas. However, the fallout in southwest Idaho did
not occur until the fourth day after the detonation of Apple 1 (Figure TP/7/F)
when most trajectories had left the United States (Figures TP/7a/T and TP/7b/T).
It is possible that a low-pressure system to the west of NTS, mentioned by List
(1956), carried low-level debris northward on south winds from beneath the two
3-km msl trajectories that moved northeastward from NTS after each of the two
explosions.
The heaviest fallout occurred eastward from NTS where the upper two
trajectories of Apple 1 and the highest trajectory of Wasp Prime traversed;
these were in Lincoln County (NV), Iron, Garfield and Kane counties of Utah.
Upper-Air Trajectories
The upper-air trajectories for Apple 1 and for Wasp Prime are shown on
Figures TP/7a/T and TP/7b/T, respectively. The 3-km trajectories for both tests
followed similar paths to the northeast into Canada and the 9.2 km trajectories
for both tests moved southeastward and then eastward across the southern tier of
states to the east coast. However, the 5.6 km trajectory for Apple 1 moved far
to the south crossing the Gulf of Mexico to southern Florida and the Bahamas
while the slower 5.6 km trajectory of Wasp Prime crossed the central United
States to southeast Virginia.
As far as fallout is concerned, the two tests, Apple 1 and Wasp Prime, are
being treated as one event because Wasp Prime was exploded only five hours after
Apple 1 making it impossible to distinguish between the fallout patterns of the
two tests. Deposition of radioactive iodine (I-131) was widespread over the U.S.
following these two tests with California being the only state without
depositions (Fig.TP/7/F). As the two 3.0 km trajectories moved northeastward
and the 5.6 km trajectory of Apple 1 moved southeastward with both 9.2 km
trajectories, fallout spread eastward between the two sets as far as eastern New
Mexico and Colorado. As the trajectories moved eastward, fallout generally kept
pace with the slower 3.0 and 5.6 km trajectories but also remained in the
southwest as delayed deposition. The 9.2 km trajectories moved rapidly eastward
and seemed to provide no immediate fallout. The lack of GF sites in the
southwest half of New Mexico is unfortunate since the CDB map, Fig.TP/7/TCDB,
shows that the entire state received some fallout. Deposition may have covered
the entire state on the second day after detonation since GF data showed that
Arizona was covered on the second day.
By the fourth day (1200 GMT, 1 April to 1200 GMT, 2 April), fallout, wet
(in the northwest and southeast) and dry (in the southwest), was widespread
between the longitudes of western Pennsylvania and Nevada and moved into New
England on the fifth day. Widespread fallout continued from the Rocky Mountains
to New England through the eighth day but average values tapered down to light
fallout by the eighth day (1200 GMT, 5 April to 1200 GMT, 6 April).
Almost all the depositions lagged behind the trajectories as delayed
fallout. The slow and uneven eastward movement of the 5.6 km trajectory of Wasp
Prime may have "carried" much of the fallout that spread across the middle
portions of the country.
